About us


The University Mental Health Research Institute (UMHRI) was founded by Professor C. Stefanis in 1989. It is linked to the University of Athens Medical School, but is administratively and financially independent. The Board of Trustees consists of the Director of the Institute and 5 members appointed or elected according to special provisions.

The objectives of the U.M.H.R.I. are:
1 To conduct and promote research on the main areas of mental health (biological, psychological and social), in collaboration with relevant, national and international institutions.
2 To act as an advisor and offer information and services in the field of mental health to state authorities, institutions and Universities and other scientific organizations.
3 To plan and develop educational programs on mental health that meet the needs and perspectives of the existing post-graduate programs of the University of Athens Medical School and to assist post-graduate students to carry out their dissertations.

To operate units for the education of mental health workers and the training of mentally ill patients.

5 To run postgraduate and other programs that provides specialized knowledge on specific areas of mental health.

To provide health services by operating: a) specific units for the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric diseases and b) rehabilitation units.

In order to meet its objectives the Institute:

Designs and submits proposals to relevant public, private and European bodies and carries out research programs based on its own resources or in collaboration with other scientific organizations.


Organizes conferences, lectures and seminars and promotes educational or other activities relevant to its objectives.


Collaborates with national and foreign Universities, Research Institutes and other organizations relevant to its scientific scope, as well as Ministries and other public and private agents.


Provides - depending on its budgetary possibilities - financial support to scientists in graduate studies relevant to its aims.


Publishes books, research reports and other educational material. It also issues material for the promotion of the Institute.


Collects all relevant information from a variety of sources in order to create data banks and archives.


Develops and maintains an updated infrastructure including all the necessary supporting equipment in order to sustain its ongoing activities.

A. Research
The research activities of the University Mental Health Research Institute fall within the following fields:

I. Basic and Applied Research in
   - Neurophysiology
   - Psychopharmacology
   - Histochemistry
   - Neurobiology
   - Psychophysiology
   - Chronobiology
   - Neuropsychiatric Genetics
   - Signal processing
   - Sensorimotor control

In order to accomplish its research objectives the UMHRI has established well equipped Laboratories within its premises. Findings from research activities have been published in international scientific (SCI) journals, such as Psychiatric Genetics, Molecular Genetics, Biological Psychiatry, Psychological Medicine, Schizophrenia Research, American Journal of Psychiatry, Neuropsycoendocrinology, Psychiatry Research, Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica, Journal of Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology, Drug and Alcohol Abuse, Schizophrenia Bulletin et al (more than 150 articles) as well as in a number of international scientific books. In addition, more than 40 research reports as well as 24 scientific books have been published in the Greek language.

II. Social Psychiatry and Epidemiological Research

Epidemiological research is carried out in the general and student populations focusing mainly on substance use and abuse and other health related issues (ESPAD, HBSC-WHO etc) as well as on attitudes towards mental illness (i.e. anti-stigma, social beliefs).

B. Training
1 A Vocational Training Centre proving training for mental health staff to be employed in various mental health services as well as for unemployed mental health professionals.
2 A Specialized Centre of Social and Vocational Rehabilitation for People with Special Needs.
3 Self-financed postgraduate educational programs in :
  a Psychosexual disorders: Diagnosis and Treatment (2-yrs course)
  b Behavioural Treatment for Anxiety Disorders (2-yrs course)
  c Psychosocial Rehabilitation: Psychosocial Treatment Approaches (2-yrs course)
  d Behavioural Family Therapy in Psychosis (2-yrs course)
  e Cognitive Therapy (2-yrs course)
  f Systemic Family and Marital Therapy (4-yrs course)
  g Brief ad hoc seminars on issues such as diagnostic instruments for mental disorders, research methods etc

C. Mental Health Services
UMHRI operates the following mental health services:
1 A Mental Health Centre covering a catchment area of 200,000 people
2 A Day Care Centre providing psychosocial management and psychopharmacological treatment to 20 patients recently discharged from psychiatric hospitals
3 A Psychosocial and Vocational Rehabilitation Unit, offering services to approximately 70 ex-inpatients daily
4 An Anti-stigma of mental disorder program and a Helpline for Depression
5 A Half-way house and a protected apartment for chronic mental patients

D. Drug Addiction and Relative Studies
a) Epidemiological Research in the General and Student populations
Epidemiological research is carried out every four years in the general and student populations focusing mainly on substance use and abuse and other health issues (ESPAD, HBSC - WHO etc) with the aim to follow trends and provide guidelines for the development of appropriate prevention policies.
b) The Greek Focal Point of the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction
The aims of Greek Focal Point aims are to collect, analyse and interpret information on the drug/alcohol problem and on the needs and priorities in the field of demand and demand reduction. The deriving information is addressed to interested institutions and services for the development of policies. In addition, the Focal Point contributes to the development of man-power for professionals of its network of collaborating agents which extends all over the country.
